Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur Review

Stayed at the Mandarin Oriental for 4 nights during a business trip. A client advised me to stay at this hotel and I'm grateful he did so. It was worth every ringgit. The hotel was beautiful, clean, spacious and with a great service. When the reception found out I had sprained my ankle on the incoming flight they even arranged a crutch for me. There was a nice bar, good business center and a great lounge where they served a fantastic breakfast with hot and cold food to suit everyone's taste. The location is ideal, next to the Twin Towers with it's shopping mall and small park. To travel to busy Kuala Lumpur and stay at the peaceful Mandarin Oriental makes the perfect balance.

It has now been 2 years since we visited, but we still talk about this hotel. The pure luxury including the infinity pool that looks out onto the square near Petronos Towers. We got a really great deal on Expedia. Shopping centre with great restaurants adjoins the hotel, and we had a direct view onto the Petronos towers which was amazing. Highly recommended and they were really kind to my 10 yo daughter, leaving cookies every day for her in our room. If you are in Kuala Lumpur, this is THE place you need to stay.

Satay Review

I came here yesterday to order food to go for an early Mother's Day dinner for 9 people. This place has a lot of dishes. We ordered a bunch of things - roti canais,  satays (chicken & beef), beef chow fun, salt & pepper squid, beef rendangs, hainanese half chickens, large orders of hainanese rice, hot & spicy clams, and mee goreng) all for $107. Best Malaysian food I've had as of today! Second note, best satays I've ever had. The meat pieces were quite small compared to the street stands but the favor is way better.  I never ordered satays because I'm afraid the meat would be dry and tasteless - Satay proved me wrong! The sweet/spicy peanut dipping sauce was remarkable so be sure to use it on everything. I want to go back to try the noodle soups...like now.

I like this place a lot.  It's in flushing but away from the congestion of the heart of flushing, which is a nightmare.  Love that they give generous portions.  Sure, prices went up, but who didn't! Portions stayed the same. taste really good and generous portions bring customers back. This is the only place I know that uses blood cockles in the char kuey teow...just like how it's eaten in Kuala Lumpur. Hawker dishes are tastey and it's fairly good price.

Malaysia Grill Review

For the area, the prices are great and the portions are sharable. Second, the flavors are amazing, but you do have to know what to get. I lived in Kuala Lumpur as a child and tried Malaysian food while living in Dubai.  Like Thai or Indian food, a Malaysian dish is a fusion of cultures, and how a dish ends up in the end depends on who (ethnicity wise, for example) makes it. So, for example, when I go to a middle-of-the road Indian restaurant and the owners/chefs are of Hindu origins, for example, I will stick to veggie dishes and place my bet on a paneer dish.

What I love about Malaysian food is the Indian-Chinese fusion flavor profile and those are the dishes that I, after sampling many, settled on in the end. Please do not order "orange flavor" beef or chicken from here -- although I must admit that I haven't tried them at MG. Go to a Panda Express -- you'll save yourself money and satisfy your craving for yummy Chinese-American food. Likewise, do not order the fried shrimp (as my friend did) because you will get a plate of fried shrimp and dipping sauce.

I always ordered the roti canay...the curry is delicious and the roti is buttery, flaky...mmm. The Malaysian satay is also good. For entrees, I settled on Beef Randan and Kari Aram. These are the heartier options. The lighter options that I recommend are the mango chicken (for dine-in dinners, they serve it in a mango shell) and Malaysian style eggplant.

Belachan Restaurant Review

I have been to almost every Malaysian Restaurant I could find  in Brooklyn and Chinatown Manhattan and Flushing Queens. Belachan restaurant is actually one of my favorites top 3 Malaysian Restaurants. Having my mom growing up in Malaysia, she knows what good and whats not.

The Roti Canai I do like alot because of the curry chicken sauce which is actually one of the spiciest I have had from these restaurants. I don't find the bread itself as bad as some places I have tried it, what makes it is the sauce itself. Satay chicken is one of my favorite appetizers, which I do recommend out of the three satay choices. Only issue you might see if this place Deep Fried it rather then grill it like the way Nyonya/Penang.

Me and my family always get the Hockien Noodle from this place, I find theirs the best in Brooklyn. Best is the pieces of fried pork fat they throw on-top of the dish which is my favorite part. My favorite is the Lo-Mein (Egg Soup Style) which I find is the best in NYC. Pearl Noddle, Squid, Cabbage, fried pork fat and egg-drop-like soup, I love it here.

Cafe Asean Review

Cafe Asean is a new favorite lunch place. Their prices are really reasonable for the quantity you get, and the ambiance is very quaint and earthy. The food doesn't come out instantly, so make sure you have a good hour lunch break. Otherwise, though, the food is definitely worth the wait. There are some traditional dishes as well as some less common sounding ones -- my awesome dish had lotus root. I can't wait to go back and try more dishes!

I come to this place twice a month and never disappointed by the food. The specials are made with ingredients bought locally, the food is cooked just right and really I am all about the sauces. Love me a good sauce. Oh one of my faves is clay pot rice $13.25: Malaysians style paella with chicken. mushrooms, sweet sausage and salted cod. Love it!

I will be honest the services needs a little polishing, it just seems a little difficult to figure out who your server is but the food is always served promptly. They also have a beautiful and romantic enclosed back garden with a retracting, pitched glass roof with a big old tree growing through it.
